Open Question: Why do fans feel the need to criticize a player's significant other?

I know this is not the first case (Tony Romo and...Carrie Underwood? Or Jessica Simpson?) of fans blaming a player's SO for a player's performance or saying the player needs to "control" the SO. But shouldn't the fans be blaming the player? It is, after all, at the feet of the player to make the plays or not.
